Arju is a friendly and jovial person, a bit of a himbo, and someone who often flirts without realizing it.She is also something of a savant when it comes to learning new weapons, tools, and even magic. She enjoys using her varied skills to help people, especially friends. However while she takes pleasure in the athleticism of fighting, she does not enjoy the violence of it (or really understand people who do).She can seem quiet or aloof at times, but this is mainly due to her being an amnesiac and trying to not let on how much/what she doesn't remember.

History

Arju was born somewhere in Othard, where her name was originally Rerha. When she was only a few years old the Garleans invaded and she fled with her family. She was the only one who survived, and eventually was taken in as a refugee in Old Sharlayan.She grew up in a small orphanage there, and not really having the aptitude to be any sort of scholar, spent her days pretending to be an adventurer like she'd heard stories of. This led her to mostly doing lots of small odd jobs and errands for people.When she was in her teens she joined the Gleaners, in the hope that one day it would let her see the world. Part of her wished to find her hometown one day, but had no idea where it was or what it was even called.

Her early years with the Gleaners mostly involved doing things around Old Sharlayan, or helping roaming Gleaners upon their returns. It was during this period she met a Miqo'te around her age named Y'shtola, who was visiting the city to take care of something for her master.Despite very different personalities the two became fast friends after Rerha saved her from falling off a cliff, (which was also Rerha's fault, having surprised Y'shtola was she was practicing magic in secret).While they only spent a short time together, they had become extremely close by the time Y'shtola had to return to her master, which only further motivated Rerha to want to see more of the world. It wouldn't be until they reunite that she would realize Y'shtola was her first crush.

Prior the the Seventh Umbral Calamity she was taken under the wing of a senior Gleaner named Vrev Arda. With Vrev she began to see more of the world, especially Eorzea.Vrev's philosophy of being a Gleaner wasn't just to get the things she was asked to acquire, but to give back something of equal value in exchange for taking something. Going to great effort to make sure things were always better off than she found them. Which led to her interacting and working closely with different people and communities in and around Eorzea.While on one of Gleaner excursions near Limsa the Seventh Umbral Calamity occurred. Gleaners had been warned ahead of time to leave Eorzea, or take shelter far from the battle, however Rerha insisted that they stay in order to be of assistance to the people and communities they'd grown close to, but in the chaos following Dalamud's fall and Bahamut's attack Vrev was crushed by falling rubble.Seeing her mentor die, and the ruins left behind from the calamity only steeled Rerha's resolve more about wanting to help the people around her. And so she decided to fake her own death so as to not return to Old Sharlayan, and instead stay in Eorzea to help in the recovery of the calamity. After dying her hair red, she took the name Arju Vira, and began adventuring.

Arju would join the Scions a few years after as a part time Man-at-Arms to help help keep the rank and file members well trained. She became a more full time member leading up to the events of Stormblood as her work with the Scions began to take up more of her time.She was delighted to find herself reunited with Y'shtola, but made no mention of how they had met as kids. Despite that the two quickly became close again. After Y'shtola was pulled out of the lifestream Arju confessed to her feelings and the two started dating. But they decided to keep it a secret from the other Scions.Before the events of Shadowbringers, Arju reached a breaking point and ran away from the Scions. Her inability to stop whatever was causing the Scions to fall comatose, especially the thought of possibly losing Y'shtola again, became too much for her to bare.Combining some various magical concepts together she succeeded in sealing away most of her memories within her Dark Knight Esteem, in the hopes that she could start over again like she had after the calamity, unburdened by the responsibilities she felt no longer qualified for.She was eventually located by Krile in a remote town outside Limsa thanks to the particular way in which crafted items (which Tataru had recognized). Arju (whose hair was back to white from no longer dying it), had no memory of the Scions and only knew her own name.It didn't take much convincing to get her to rejoin the Scions, as Arju (not knowing why she'd lost her memory) felt an obligation to her previous self to try and protect their friends so that if/when her memory returned they'd be safe.Before being sent to the First, Krile filled Arju in on the Scions there so that she could pretend she still had her memory, because otherwise Krile knew they would prioritize helping Arju get her memory back over getting themselves safely back to the Source.Only Y'shtola noticed that something was different/wrong with Arju, and confronted her about it. After hearing Krile's reasoning , and agreeing with it, she explained more about her own relationship with Arju prior to the memory loss. It wasn't until after defeating Hades that Arju and Y'shtola explained what had happened to Arju before she arrived on the First.Since then however Arju's learned the truth from conversing with the previous version of herself that exists now within her Esteem (and asks that she calls her Rerha instead of Arju). Esteem Rerha insists that she does not want to be restored, but instead wants Arju to live her life as she sees fit.After taking up the Reaper job, Arju found that the understanding and connection she's formed with her previous self has allowed her to use Esteem Rerha instead of a voidsent. The fusion of the two that occurs when she's enshrouded sometimes gives her access to flashes of her old memories.
